Watch Out For…
Eddy Leung, chef-owner of private kitchen Chefstudio in Aberdeen, has jumped right into his next venture, G7 (7 Glenealy, Central, 2810-6626). Tucked into a quiet slope in Central, this European/Italian resto isn’t hard to find per se, but the real question is: What do you do once you get to the entrance? (Hint: try not to look too desperate, ‘cause someone might be watching and laughing at your expense.) The décor here is worlds away from Chefstudio’s industrial-chic space; you feel more like you’re at an eccentric uncle’s home. There’s a narrow bookshelf-adorned hallway that you need to walk down before you get to the main dining areas (one private, one communal). If you look up from the public sitting space, there’s a huge wooden slab hanging from the high ceiling that’s made to resemble a Medieval castle door. Um, awesome! Expect some rockin’ dishes from the seasonal lunch and dinner menus—a heavenly lobster risotto with melt-in-your-mouth Hokkaido uni; roasted baby lamb shoulder; and seared scallop starters. Chef Eddy also imports some finger-lickin’ burrata straight from Italy for his antipasti arsenal. Lunch starts at around $360 while dinner will set you back just under $800 per head. Want to get away from the crowds, but still be able to fit a few rounds of drinks in at busy LKF after your meal? Or feel like sneaking off for a quiet lunch break right in the heart of town? Well—now you can.
Talk of the Town
Watch a master noodle-maker slap around a heavy slab of dough and turn it into beautiful, thin strands every night at Hutong (28/F, One Peking Road, 1 Peking Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 3428-8342) from now until September. The glitzy Chinese resto has launched a “Memories of Old Peking” menu that starts with a “Cixi” (China’s last dowager empress) cocktail, made with a mix of chrysanthemum and Chinese spirits, before moving on to dishes such as Peking duck, hand-shredded chicken, and of course, a bowl of freshly hand-pulled noodles. The menu is set at $988 per person, and includes a small souvenir (chopsticks or a stick of candied fruits) that you can redeem at the temporary market stall set up by the entrance.
Happy Birthday, W! The swanky hotel (1 Austin Rd. West, West Kowloon) turns five this year and is celebrating with a massive promotion at each of its dining establishments. For instance: at Sing Yin (G/F, 3717-2848), you can feast on no fewer than 10 abalone-themed dishes, including a baked Dalian fresh abalone with dried mandarin peel, or a braised whole Australian abalone in oyster sauce—for anywhere from $86 to $2,300 per piece. There’s also a five-course menu for $555 that comes with wok-fried scallops, more abalone, and Alaskan snow crab for you to enjoy. Then there’s the Tinseltown Tea Set at Woobar (6/F, 3717-2889), featuring lobster pastries and mojito lollipops. At $398 plus service for two, that’s not a bad bargain at all.
