Steven Spielberg’s first Jurassic Park film didn’t go as smoothly as planned. This is down to an unforeseen disaster that hit the island where the shooting occurred.

Jurassic Park was shot on the picturesque island of Kauai. The director of one of the highest-grossing movies of all time was not aware of the impending disaster that was about to hit the island. The terrifying storm that started the chaos in the film was actually happening in real life. In the Hollywood flick, the natural disaster makes it harder for the team to reset the security protocols as the dinosaurs cause havoc. But the stars had no idea while shooting that they were facing the same fate.

Jurassic Park’s storm was actually real

One of the astonishing facts that many Jurassic Park fans don’t know is that Steven Spielberg’s filming schedule was effected by the weather. But the director wasn’t aware what was to come.

Recalling the time, Sue Kanoho, executive director of the Kauaʻi Visitors Bureau said: “So I thanked [Spielberg] for filming here, and I said, “don’t worry, you guys will be gone before the hurricane hits.’ And he looked at me so strangely.”

On the final days of the shooting, a Category 4 hurricane hit the Island of Kauai. As per reports, scenes like Dr. Alan Grant discovering a dinosaur egg, the automated ride through the park in the SUVs, and other wide-angle clips of the landscape were captured just before the disaster hit, but the skies were a forewarning.

It wasn’t just for the filming crew, the experience was equally traumatic for the cast members who were on set. Celebrity actress Laura Dern recently said in an interview: “We went through a level five [officially categorized level 4] hurricane together – it was a very traumatic and bonding experience on the first film.”

Hurricane Iniki was one of the worst disasters of all time

What’s more surprising, by looking back, is how the Jurassic Park crew survived one of the worst disasters to ever hit the state.

Hurricane Iniki that threatened the island of Kauai uprooted foundations of houses and vehicles.

Kanoho recalled: “It was devastating. There were places on the south shore that were inundated, houses were knocked off their foundations, and vehicles were gone. It was the worst thing we’ve survived in my 35 years here.”
