Laura Lynch, one of the founding members of The Chicks, formerly known as The Dixie Chicks, has sadly passed away aged 65 in a car crash in Texas, reported to be a head-on collision.

The music star rose to fame when she founded the country group alongside guitarist Robin Lynn Macy, and sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer in 1989. She stayed in the band for four years, until her departure in 1993. During her time, the group released three albums, Thank Heavens For Dale Evans, 1992’s Little Ol’ Cowgirl, and 1993’s Shouldn’t A Told You That.

The Chicks pay tribute to Laura Lynch after fatal car crash

Lynch was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash Friday, which took place on Highway 62 around 5:45 pm, according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety (via PEOPLE).

The Chicks took to Instagram to pay tribute to Laura, after her sudden tragic death.

In a statement, alongside a video of Laura and the band performing the track West Texas Wind, they penned:

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks,” the emotional statement began.

“We hold a special place in our hearts for the time we spent playing music, laughing, and traveling together.

“Laura was a bright light…her infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band.

“Laura had a gift for design, a love of all things Texas, and was instrumental in the early success of the band,” the post continued.

“Her undeniable talents helped propel us beyond busking on street corners to stages all across Texas and the mid-West.”

The statement was signed off by current members of the group, Emily, Martie & Natalie.

Fans of the band, who changed their name from The Dixie Chicks to The Chicks in 2020, took to X, formerly known as Twitter to pay tribute to the star.

“So sorry for this loss. Love and light to you and her family and friends,” penned one.

“Heaven gained a Bass Playing Angel,” wrote another fan.

“I saw her in Grapevine Texas in the 80’s. They were really good even in the beginning,” a third reminisced.

Another commented: “Oh no! I always loved her voice. Rest in peace.”
